Respect Da Mic(RDM) monthly slam/workshops* will be held, typically, on the second Saturday of each month, and is open to everyone unless the slam is designated for a particular demographic group; for example, the women’s slam. The first 10 poets to register within the advertised registration time will be eligible to participate in the slam. There is a $10 cover for all pariticipating poets and audience members. There will be a cash prize for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place poets. *Content is intended for mature audiences.
The slam will consist of 3 rounds with elimination(s) each round. The 1 and 2 rounds will be cumulative with a clean slate in the 3rd round. The poets will draw numbers to determine the order of the first round. In the 2nd round, the poet with the highest score will perform first and the round will end with the poet with the lowest score. All slams will follow the rules as laid out by PSI with respect to original work, no props, time penalties, etc. Points are accumulated during the slam for the season based on the following:
1st Place – 5 points
2nd Place – 4 points
3rd Place – 3 points
All other competitors – 1 point
If there is a tie for 10th place the poet with the highest cumulative score for the season will secure the final slot to enter The Grand Slam.
Poets who wish to secure a team or representative spot must be at least 18 and adhere to the community service, fundraising and promotion requirements.(see below)
-RDM FUNDRAISING AND PROMOTIONS:
Poets competing to secure a spot on the team or as a IWPS or WOWPS representative are required to assist in fundraising and RDM promotions throughout the 2011-12 slam season.
-RDM COMMUNITY SERVICE:
RDM believes in the power of words and is an advocate in the Charlotte community with workshops, school or prison visits, etc. Poets competing for RDM team must complete an approved community service event and attend monthly workshops. For an invite to Grand Slam Finals or to be a IWPS?WOWPS rep, the poet must have completed a minimum of two community events and attend monthly RDM workshops. There may be no more than 2 absences from any workshop. Failure to comply, poet cannot earn points to slam the following month. (Cameo appearances do not qualify)
- JUDGES:
Poem and performance will be judged by three to five judges randomly selected from the audience before the show. The MC/SlamMaster will do their best to find unbiased judges based on the audience. Ideally, the judges will not know or have any connection to the competing poets.
- SCORING:
The judges will score each performance from 0.0 to 10.0. Zero is the worst, ten is the best. If we have five judges, the high and low scores are dropped and the three scores in the middle are added together for the score. If we have three judges, then all scores are kept and added together to obtain the score for each poem.
-TIE BREAKER:
In the event of a tie for first place, a death match round will occur to determine the winner. If there is a tie for 2nd or 3rd place, the poet with the highest cumulative score will receive the points.
-GRAND SLAM FINALS
The Grand Slam will be held in April 2011 and reserved for the 10 poets who have earned the most points and have complied with the required community service, fundraising and promotion requirements.
The Grand Slam will be 3 rounds with elimination(s) each round. The poets will draw numbers to determine the order of the first round. In the 2 round, the top four poets and the slammaster will form the Respect Da Mic Team. The poet with the highest score will perform first and the round will end with the poet with the lowest score. The 3rd round will be clean slate and determines the Grand Slam Champion. The team members are responsible for purchasing or renewing their PSI membership in a timely manner.
All winning poets must declare their intention to serve on the Respect Da Mic team immediately following The Grand Slam and cannot serve on any other team during the same time period. Shortly after the Grand Slam a team meeting will be held to determine a practice schedule for the team. Practices are held two times a week (more as events and competitions increase). Team members are expected to attend all practices/performances/fundraisers and community service activities. Team members are required to contact the slam master of any absence. Should a team member be unable or unwilling to perform their duty as a Respect Da Mic team member, the 5th-10th place poets would be contacted to fill the spot, and/or a “Last Chance Slam” will be held to replace that membr.
Upon accepting a team slot, members will be allowed only ONE absence(with prior notification to slammaster) from a RDM practice, fundraising event, etc. Failure to notifiy and/or have additional absences, the team member will be replaced with the next qualifying finalist and will not be able to compete during the next slam season.
-IWPS REPRESENTATIVE:
All poets who have adhered to the community service, fundraising and promotion requirements are invited to participate in the slam. The slam will feature 1, 2, 3, and 4 minute rounds with all poets competing in all rounds - no eliminations. The winning poet will be responsible for assisting with RDM fundraising and promotions to help cover any associated costs for travel, registration, hotel accommodations, etc. If enough funds are not raised by the required PSI event registration date, the winner will be responsible for all expenses. If the winner of the slam is unable to attend IWPS or fails to assist with RDM fundraising and promotions in any way, Respect Da Mic will go down the list of qualifying competing finalists to determine the team representative.
-WOWPS REPRESENTATIVE:
All poets who live their lives as women and have adhered to the community service, fundraising and promotion requirements are invited to participate in the slam.
